Visualize yourself moving to a new country, you’re standing at the airport and you see so many faces that you haven’t seen before. You hear people talking but their way of communicating seems so rare to you, and the voice on your head says “I don’t understand anything”,
In this situation would you feel curious or would you feel lost?
I was born in El Salvador, a small country in central America, I came to the U.S. when I was 12 and now I’m 18, I guess not much long ago but it feels like it.
I started 7th grade in this new country not knowing the language or culture, I was struggling a lot. Especially with school work because I have always wanted to focus and do well on academics.
I dedicated my time to learning English, I’d rather study than hang out with friends, and was always resilient in the process.
I was proud of myself for learning fast because by the start of high school I was speaking English fluently. However, sometimes I still felt out of place culture wise.
One day I got invited to the Latinx Student Union, and I didn’t know what it was about but I still went and tried it.
At this event people from the same cultural background got together and we talked about struggles we all have as Latinx people in the United States. Some were born here from Latino parents, others immigrated either legally or illegally. Some came at a younger age and others at an older age. Our experiences turned out to be similar, even if there are some differences we go through an adjustment process.
We have to find and learn our way through the distinct culture, language, and traditions. Yet we are still able to make valuable and meaningful connections with people different from us. This event taught me that we can support each other and just how adaptable and resilient we are/the Latinx community is.
