REFLECTION
I chose this topic because it affects a lot of people who are part of my community. Minority students specifically. I focused on their struggles and why they have these, how it affects us, and possible solutions. Of course it’s hard to change this but speaking up about it is necessary to make an impact.
Some obstacles I faced while putting this documentary together were having to figure out what software I would use. To be honest I was really stressed at the moment, I just opened iMovie on my tablet because I remembered my cousin and I had made a funny trailer on there. I had already forgotten how to use it but I started playing around with it and finally added my interviews, background sound, and pictures. I tried to add the voice over and this took me a long time to record and edit together so timing would be good and photos would show up at the right time. For interviews to play and sound well without the background music playing too loud and for my voice to blend in with it. It took a lot of work from me to get the information and put it together exactly as I wanted to say it and what I wanted to show in each of my points. In addition to a general storyboard I did a transcript in which I put my interviews and what I said in my documentary word by word. Something that is helpful about this project was that if you picked the same subject, you kind of or already had the information you would transfer to your documentary. You kind of just have to put it together and I think this is better specially because it may take a lot of time to figure out the software and get it to where you want it to be because you’re the one who knows how you want to show it, there’s not that requirement of structure really just that it's a combination of primary and secondary evidence and the time limit. Also I feel like the class moves fast so it’s stressful but at the same time it forces you to have every piece ready building up to complete the final project. Resources and ideas of what software we could use were given so I think that’s really helpful because we could choose and not take forever to think what we wanted to make the documentary on. Also I didn’t personally use media depot because I didn’t really have the time to go in or make an appointment but it seemed very helpful because they give you tips. I struggled with time but that’s because I had other things going on. The storyboard was difficult for me to start and actually finish because I wasn’t sure of what I wanted to do exactly. But when I actually thought about what I wanted to be like it got easier and I think I captured and showed everything I wanted the way I wanted. To me it actually came out really good.
What I learned from working on this project was new skills to create a documentary, and trying and fixing things, perseverance, which is good to have.
